On September 1, 2013, Lt. Morales and Tpr. Murphy were on patrol and slowly travelling through a rest area in Longwood, Florida when they where approached by an intoxicated male who asked to be arrested for drinking and driving. During their investigation, both Troopers concluded that the male appeared to be in psychological distress, and posed a serious danger to himself and the travelling public.
The male had recently suffered the loss of his wife, his only family member, and as a result relapsed into alcohol abuse. Both Troopers remained with the male, comforted him throughout the interview, and suggested that he seek professional counseling. The male agreed, thanked the troopers, and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
As a result of the Troopers patience, care and diligence, Morales and Murphy were able to console and persuade an emotionally distressed person into seeking psychiatric help, ultimately averting danger and protecting the travelling public.
