On July 29, 2012, at approximately 5:50 P.M., the security officer, of the southbound rest area in Mims, Florida, dialed *FHP and advised dispatchers that he was with a lost male, later identified as a missing elderly man from a Silver Alert. After a brief conversation with the guard, the elderly male left the rest area as our units were dispatched to the location. At approximately 6:18 P.M., Auxiliary Trooper Michael Terrico arrived in the area and began a search for the elderly male and the vehicle.
Once Troopers arrived in the area, they checked all of the exits, the gas stations, and other area businesses, for the vehicle which the security guard had described. The check resulted in negative contact with male. Auxiliary Trooper Terrico remained in the area, as the other units resumed patrol duties. Some time later, the security guard called the ORCC and advised that he had just seen the same vehicle heading north on I-95. Auxiliary Trooper Terrico continued his search into Volusia County, in an attempt to make contact and at approximately 8:00 P.M., spotted the vehicle at a traffic light at the off-ramp from northbound I-95 onto SR-44. Auxiliary Trooper Terrico made contact with the subject and was able to identify him by his Florida driver’s license. The Trooper then contacted the elderly male's son and reunited them shortly thereafter.
Due to the tenaciousness of Auxiliary Trooper Terrico, in his effort to locate this elderly male, a positive outcome was achieved in what otherwise could have ended in tragedy for a person who suffered from seizures and the onset of dementia.
