On Nov 6th, 2012, Trooper Curry was off duty, dining with his family, when a noise disturbance occurred within the restaurant. As Trooper Curry turned to view in the direction of the noise, he noted that a young child (about 5 years of age) was clutching his hands around his throat and was in obvious distress. The Father of the child, stood behind the boy, and was incorrectly attempting to perform the Heimlich maneuver. The child stopped breathing.
Trooper Curry, having been trained in the proper use of the Heimlich Procedure, offered assistance and took control of the child. Using three Heimlich thrusts, he was able to clear a very large potato wedge that had blocked the child's airway and was therefore able to restore breathing. Trooper Curry's wife contacted 911 emergency services as he rendered aide to the child. Through his quick assessment and training, Trooper Curry was able to perform an effective rescue technique and avert serious injury or death to another person. Great work Trooper Curry!
